Not dainty; these are working hands. My mother grew up as the eldest daughter in rural China. She had to do the family's laundry by hand in the freezing river water, causing her lasting joint issues to this day. This labour was never expected of males in the household, despite men and women working equally in the fields. 

This piece was created as a sister piece to Kahla Yzerman's poem for the Intertidal, a collaboration between Brushing Hands Artists Collective and Saltwater Writers Collective.
